AGRA Welcomes EU's Commitment To African Farmers

The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) has welcomed the European Union's intention to channel one billion Euros (about N183 billion) to African farmers, a statement said.
The statement issued by Chairman of AGRA board, Mr. Kofi Annan, said the commitment was critical to solving the global food security crisis.

"The support of the EU at this critical time is an important step towards improving food security across Africa and a welcome show of solidarity with African smallholder farmers,'' he said.
Annan, a former UN Secretary General, said increasing agricultural productivity in Africa would boost economic development.

He said this would be achieved through the immediate provision of inputs including seeds and fertilisers as well as finance. AGRA is a dynamic partnership working across Africa to help millions of small-scale farmers and their families lift themselves out of poverty and hunger.

AGRA programmes develop practical solutions to significantly boost farm productivity and incomes for the poor while safeguarding the environment. It advocates for policies that support its work across all key aspects of the African agricultural "value chain" from seeds, soil health, and water to markets and agricultural education.

With support from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the DFID, AGRA maintains offices in Nairobi and Accra.
