AU Seeks Competitive Access For African Goods

Preparatory to the third ordinary meeting of the African Union's (AU) Sub-Committee of Directors General of Customs next Thursday in Abuja, the Customs experts are seeking competitive access for African Union goods in the European Union. Nigeria's Comptroller General of Customs, Mr. Jacob Gyang Buba, who chaired the meeting on Monday, also regretted that trade within African Union states was still low, being rated at less than 10 per cent of total volume of African trade with the rest of the world. Noting that regional trade holds the key to growth, he also sought possible compensation mechanisms for administrators that implement the economic partnership agreement. The expert meeting is expected to come up with recommendations for the consideration of the Director Generals of Customs of AU member states scheduled for this week in Abuja. The Directors General will in turn report and make recommendations to the policy organs of the African Union. The meeting is expected to also strengthen mutual administrative assistance programmes and building capacity.
