Best Bidder Would Get NITEL, Says Jonathan

9th July 2008

Vice President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday held a meeting with a delegation of Vodafone Executives led by the Company's Chief Executive Officer (UK), Paul Donovad, stating that only the best of the interested bidders will be given consideration in the process of privatising the Nigeria Telecommunications Limited (NITEL).

He expressed the desire of the Federal Government to "to quickly conclude the privatisation of NITEL for the benefit of Nigerians." The Vodafone Executives are in Nigeria for further consultations towards their goal of acquiring part of the 51 per cent of the equity in NITEL being offloaded by Transcorp.

The Vice President regretted that despite the availability of reasonable telecommunications infrastructure in Nigeria, the fixed land lines are functioning below expectation, blaming this for the expensive operating costs in the industry. The Federal Government, the Vice President stated, will stop at nothing to ensure low telecommunications tariff. He noted that this would come as soon as landlines start working efficiently.
