Fibre Optic Infrastructure Launched By MTN

MTN Nigeria Limited has launched its fibre optic backbone infrastructure. This coincides with its recent promotion and growth translating to over 12 million subscribers. The launching by MTN is the first by any GSM operator in Nigeria and is expected to improve the quality of services as well as reduce the congestion and drop calls which is experienced by subscribers. Chairman of MTN Nigeria, Dr. Pascal Dozie said MTN's new fibre optic network is the latest technology in the information super highway which has the capacity to handle more than 5 million calls, data and multimedia transmission simultaneously.

The company already owns a digital microwave transmission backbone, the 3,400 Kilometre Y’elloBahn which is reputed to be the most extensive digital microwave transmission infrastructure in all of Africa. The Y’elloBahn has significantly helped to enhance call quality on MTN network.
