Starcomms To Deploy 3.5 G Mobile Technology

5th Sept 2007

Starcomms is to deploy mobile phone services in parts of the country using the 3.5 Generation mobile technology standard.

Under the 3.5G mobile technology, Internet speed which is offered at about 400megabits per second could be made three times faster to reach 1200mbps.

The Chief Executive Officer of Starcomms, Mr. Maher Qubain, who stated this in Lagos on Sunday, said the technology would be deployed in the Federal Capital Territory later this month.
He said when achieved, it would be the first time that such a mobile technology was being deployed in Africa. Towards achieving the objective, Qubain said Starcomms had entered into partnership with three mobile phone groups, namely Qualcomm, the Code Division Multiple Access Group, and Huawei Technologies. He said some work was currently going on towards achieving the roll out of the product, adding that Abuja would serve as testing ground before its rollout to other cities.

He said, “I know that I am putting a lot of pressure on the head of data service in my firm, but we will test the technology and then once Nigerians accept it, we would bring it to Lagos.”

Meanwhile, Starcomms has signed on over 780,000 subscribers on its network. According to Qubain, who spoke at a special event to mark its recent award as the mobile telecoms company of the year by the Nigeria Telecoms Awards, the firm’s decision to obtain a national unified licence has resulted in service rollout in 12 states.

He said the firm was continuing its aggressive rollout and would soon switch on services in Kaduna, Zaria and Benin.
