Nigeria Eyes Two More Communications Satellites Basking in the euphoria of her successful launch of Africa's first communication satellite last Sunday, the Federal Government has intensified efforts to launch two more of such satellites by year 2010. By government's calculation, in 2010, Nigeria should have achieved a global coverage as part of its short-term strategic plan. Also in the offing is a plan to ensure that by the time the lifespan of the present communication satellite expires in 2022, the country would have attained the target of a fleet of 10 communication satellites in orbit. The recently launched communications satellite has a lifespan of 15 years. Speaking with The Guardian, the Managing Director of Nigerian Communications Limited, Ahmed Rufai confirmed the intent of government, adding, "never again will Africa be dubbed the dark continent; never again will Africa be tagged the unwired continent and indeed, the time has come for Nigeria to take her rightful position as the flagship of the African continent and this is exactly what we have achieved. Before the 15 years lifespan expires in 2022, we are targeting that we should have a fleet of at least 10 in the orbit." Source: Guardian Back to Top |
