Nigeria To Earn $1.05b From NIGCOMSAT

Nigeria stands to earn as much as $1.05 billion from the sale and leasing of transponders from the Nigeria Communications Satellite NIGCOMSAT, due for launch in China on May 14. Broken down, the country hopes to earn between $60-70 million from the sale of each of the transponders. The Communications Satellite has a lifespan of 15 years. The communication payload of NIGCOMSAT comprises forty transponders, thirty active and ten redundant. The Managing Director of NIGCOMSAT Limited, Ahmed Rufai noted that with the launch of the satellite, the cost of GSM and Internet services in the country would crash, owing to the availability of cheaper satellite bandwidth.
