Globacom Picks Top Industry Awards

Second National Operator, Globacom, has won the two topmost awards at stake at the 2006 Nigerian Information Telecommunications Technology Awards ceremony held in Lagos on Friday.

Globacom was adjudged the Best Telecoms Company of the year 2006, while its mobile arm, Glo Mobile, was rated the Best Mobile Company of the year 2006.

Speaking on Globacom’s achievements and growth, the Chairman, Editorial Board of Guardian Newspapers, Dr. Reuben Abati, who read the citation on behalf of the NITTA’s Board of the Trustees, said that Globacom had made Nigerians proud as a national carrier, offering a bouquet of services while excelling in quality of service, innovation and growth rate.

The citation read, “When the telecoms market was thrown open for grabs, not many had the heart and temerity to go for the big one – Second National Operator licence, then Chief. Mike Adenuga Jr got the licence and came up with Globacom, a new dawn on Nigeria’s telecoms horizon.”

NITTA noted that Globacom was already working out a solution to the country’s transmission backbone by laying fibre optic throughout the country to provide services and connectivity for operators in the country and the rest of the world. Hence, “the network is laying a submarine cable to the United Kingdom and United States, which on completion, will revolutionise the telecoms business in Africa,” it said.

The panel of judges for the award acknowledged also that the International Gateway Licence for regional and international calls was already operating in full force.

Glo Mobile’s Best Mobile Company of the year award was predicated on its leadership of the industry in value added services, pocket-friendly pricing, unprecedented coverage rate and growth of subscriber base.   
“Glo Mobile has remained in the forefront of innovative service delivery in the mobile phone market, seizing the reins and becoming the company that calls the shots in fuelling intense, but healthy competition, through globally acclaimed ground-breaking services using state-of-the-art technologies, ” the citation read.
