NITEL Up-grade May Disrupt Services
By Christopher Adedeji
24th NOV 2006
The Nigerian Telecommunication (NITEL) Plc has commenced up-grade of the SAT-3 cable system as part of its efforts to provide better service and improve its network availability. This, it said may disrupt services.
According to a statement, the SAT-3 cable system is an inter-continental under-ocean cable system which links Europe, West, East, South Africa and East Asia.
The up-grade project is currently at its final stage of completion and at this stage, the additional capacity, it disclosed, must be cut over to the existing infrastructure to complete the process.
For customers who are connected to the capable system, they are bound to experience some disruptions of service. NITEL has, however, planned to control these disruptions between the hours of 01:00 a.m. and 05:00 a.m. from of November 22, 2006 to November 24.
The up-grade and migration of traffic is a pre-requisite for Messrs. Alcatel to make available optical spectrum for the insertion of the 10 Gigabits wavelength in SAT-3 from which NITEL customers will be served. The system is currently running on 2.5 Gigabits.
In the release signed by the Deputy General Manager, Corp. Communications, Mr. Bala Ibrahim Abdukadir, NITEL services on the SAT-3 cable system include IP Wholesale, international calls and International Private Leased Circuits (IPLC).
While regretting the inconveniences that customers connected to the SAT-3 cable system would suffer during this system up-grade it has, however, assured it customers of improved services while ensuring that system down-time is reduced to the barest minimum.
