Task Force Destroys N8 Million Counterfeit Drugs

Fake and counterfeit drugs, foods and beverages worth about N8 million were on Friday destroyed in Umuahia by the Abia state task force on fake/counterfeit drugs and unwholesome processed foods.
The Chairman of the Task Force, Dr Lambert Mgbaja, said that the items were seized from the Ariaria International market, Eziukwu Road market as well as shops and supermarkets in Aba.
Briefing newsmen who witnessed the destruction, Mgbaja said that about 20 suspects were currently being prosecuted by the task force.

He further explained that more than 50 shops and supermarkets had so far been sealed by the task force.
He listed the burnt items as adulterated fannol, fianol, flannol, faremol asifed, artifidin, masifed, chest and lung tablets as well as Five Alive, Don Simon, black currant and pineapple juice drinks.
Mgbaja expressed surprise that counterfeit and fake drugs still found their ways into the country despite the surveillance mounted at the seaports and international airports in the country by NAFDAC.
He thanked God that the prevalence of fake drugs, foods and beverages had reduced in the state, pointing out that routine checks showed that "the prevalence is at a low ebb in Umuahia".

Mgbaja, who described Ariaria International market and Eziukwu road market in Aba as "the main centres of distribution of fake and counterfeit drugs, foods and drinks", gave the assurance that the group would not rest on its oars.
