Govt Raises Body To Revive Textile Sector
9th JAN 2007
In a strategic move to give lifeline to the ailing textile and cotton industry, the Federal Government on Monday in Abuja inaugurated a Presidential Standing Committee on Cotton and Textiles (PSCCT). President Olusegun Obasanjo had last December instituted a presidential initiative which main task, amongst others, is the revival of the textile industry.
The fresh effort is described by government as a veritable opportunity to revive the sector and raise its performance to the enviable level it once attained. Indications from the Ministry of Commerce also had it that government was setting aside some undisclosed amount of money for the implementation of the recommendations the committee would come up with.
Part of the tasks of the committee will be to study the trends and development in the various segments of the industry such as the cotton farmers, merchants, ginneries, spinning mills, weaving and processing mills, composite mills, make-ups/garments and trade in finished goods. The committee has the Minister of Commerce, Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar, as chairman, with membership drawn from a wide spectrum of experts and stakeholders.
