Lagos Allocates Land For SMEs At New Industrial Layout  


The Lagos State government has allocated land in the modern industrial layout at Igando Epe and Ibereko for Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs).

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2007 Lagos International Trade Fair, the Lagos State Commissioner of Commerce and Industry, Adeniyi Oyemade said this is part of the State government efforts at promoting the small scale industrial establishments and strive to meet the growing demand for factory space by small and medium scale industrial entrepreneurs in Lagos.

The commissioner said that in recognition of the need to have comprehensive data bank of all existing enterprises in the state, the government recently engaged over 2000 holiday jobbers as agents to identify, collect and collated data of all Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Tradesmen and artisans in the nooks and crannies of the state.

"The essence of this programme is to assist the state government in planning for the growth and development of this very important sector of the state economy and ensuring their sustenance through access to micro credit facilities, capacity building through business clinics, business information and support centre and ensure access to government facilities. Also, a business directory containing relevant information on enterprises identified and rated during the exercise will be produced, thus, giving the enterprise access to international business partners, he said.

He said the state government is focused and will continue to pursue aggressively the development and excellent opportunities and incentives for firms operating in the zone to produce for export and compete globally. "It would also provide industries operating in the zone, the advantage of reduced costs of production, thus giving their products competitive edge in the international market. The project when completed will not only stimulate growth and attract new investment, but also generate high level of employment to the teeming population of the state," he said.

He said in an effort to provide an appropriate measures to safeguard the interest of consumers in the state against adulterated goods and unfair trade practices, the state government in collaboration with other Federal Government agencies will be inaugurating the consumer protection committee to deal with issue relating to quality and standardisation and well as unnecessary exploitation by marketers in the state.
