Nigerian traders Banned From Doing Business In Ghana

Ghana’s Minister of Trade Ms. Hannah Atteteh said at the weekend that Nigerian traders’ shops in Ghana are to remain under lock as the government is yet undecided as to when they should be opened.

Ms. Atteteh, who stated this during an interactive forum with journalists in Abuja at the weekend, said the Ghanaian Traders Association is agitating that the country has opened her doors too wide for Nigerian businessmen.

"The Ghanaian government insisted that if Nigerians will do buying and selling, they must incorporate their businesses with the minimum stated capital of $350,000. This has been the country’s position for a long time now.

She said: "So far, the Nigerian shops are still under lock. I have had several discussions with the Ghana traders union association to get them to accept that Nigerians should open their shops.

"We have done our best to go outside the law to accommodate Nigerians. I told them that under ECOWAS, we want to be treated the same way as we treat Nigerians. If we insist on these laws, it means it would be difficult for Nigerians to work in Ghana and we shall expect that Ghanaians will have similar treatment in Nigeria.

"The protest is that Nigerian traders have not met the Ghanaian’s Investment Promotion requirement and they are alleging marginalisation of the Ghanaians traders in their own country," she added.
