Nigeria Exports $169m Goods Under AGOA
By Christopher Adedeji

Nigerian non-oil exports under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) have been pegged at $US169m. According to Presidential Adviser On Export Matters Gladys Modupe Sasore, the media have not given accurate information of the position of the country in respect of the agreement.

She said the reportage suggesting that the country is not taking advantage of AGOA has not reflected the efforts of the Federal Government to whom she said, had ensured that the private sector benefit from the initiative.

"If the truth be told, government has continued to expend resource to strengthen and increase non-oil trade with the US under the AGOA".

Sasore said these at a three-day forum on procedures and documentation training Wednesday at the Rockview Hotel, Abuja

She however urged participants to make good use of the training, adding that there will no longer be excuses for United States of America (USA) bound exports not enjoying AGOA treatment on arrival due to incorrect documentation or non-report of necessary data by the responsible agency.

"Our insistence to have seasoned customs officials from the US and Accra is borne out of our belief that they would provide insight into what the US custom or border protection required of AGOA shipments and a firsthand practice of a successful sub-Saharan African countries so as to provide the teething problems, seizure etc that some countries experienced. I therefore implore all participants to use this rare opportunity to better educate themselves and become proficient in the execution of their duties on AGOA desks across the country".
