EFCC explains raid on BankPHB

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday said it invaded BankPHB offices in Abuja to obtain “originals of some documents” relating to the Petroleum Technology Development Fund. “The objective of this operation has however been turned on its head by agents of some of the indicted persons, who have gone to town with rumours that the documents are being sought by EFCC with a view to destroying them and all the evidence contained therein'' the anti graft agency stated.

''The Commission is constrained to point out that seeking original copies of documents when a case is being migrated from investigation to prosecution is a normal practice worldwide. As a matter of fact, EFCC wrote formally to the concerned bank, requesting the originals of the cheques in question, disclosing that the Commission wanted them for the purpose of prosecution.....The Commission has absolutely no reason and will not be blackmailed to change its strict adherence to proper professional conduct simply because some people with access to the media seek to cause a diversion from the real issues and thereby secure temporary relief for their principals. EFCC restates that obtaining originals of documents as opposed to copies, is a normal procedure, if a law enforcement agency is satisfied that it has through investigation built a case that can stand the test of rigorous prosecution. There is absolutely no truth in the lies about the Commission going after original copies of documents with a view to shredding them''.
